Our HERITAGE, developing school culture through collaborative art
Project: Community-School Mural project: Heritage High School
The purpose of this mural project is to use art to create a connection between the school and community. Heritage High school is a new school, only 2 years old and is trying to build and develop traditions and a relationship with the communities of Wake Forest and Raleigh, NC. The school has limited visual stimulation in the commons areas. Students at Heritage want to feel connected to their school. Feeling a connection encourages learning. A mural is a visual reminder of the connection between school and neighborhood. This mural design will allow Heritage Art students; Art Club students, and National Art Honor Society students develop a mural design that will capture the culture, beliefs, and goals of Heritage high school students.
The mural theme will draw on the school mascot and community culture and will represent all students at the school and their unity as “Heritage Huskies”. The Heritage High School mural will promote increased school spirit, community involvement, volunteerism, and an appreciation and understanding of public art. Planning, developing, and making a mural collaboratively can heighten the sense of responsibility that flows between the community and the school. Students will participate in a real-world experience of designing, creating, and installing a piece of collaborative public art. Creating a collaborative mural will also teach students the value of working together towards a common goal and communicating effectively through the visual arts. The students participating in this project will gain twenty-first century skills such as creativity, innovation, critical thinking, problem solving, communication, and collaboration.
